Beyond El Rancho

Time Out Says

Beyond El Rancho isn’t best known for food – its reputation is built around music, dancing and merriment. House band Damage is renowned as one of the most dexterous cover groups in town – they actually beat off all competition to win a 2012 Battle of the Bands contest and are as likely to be caught jamming contemporary hits as dad-rock classics; their note-perfect take of Dire Straits’ ‘Sultans of Swing’ is near legendary. Thankfully, the food is good enough to schedule a stop for more than mere sustenance alone. As the name might suggest, it’s Mexican and Tex-Mex fare, which already makes a welcome diversion from the Brit grub and burger mainstays of bar food. The meat, rice, beans and cheese classics – think nachos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas – won’t disappoint, although the more complicated meat and seafood options don’t always justify their price tag. Overall though, this is a welcome old-school gem we’d recommend to anyone dining during a night out on the older side of town.
