Time Out Says
What a triumph this quaint French eatery is for restaurants short on space but high on imagination. We are transported to a quiet Parisian alleyway eatery, dimly lit, sparingly painted and decorated, with low-slung ceilings forging a clandestine and romantic atmosphere. It’s terrific. Decorative flourishes such as wax-drizzled bottles, chalkboard menus, and quirky French poster art are subtle in appearance but powerful in feeling. All this would, of course, be slightly irrelevant if the food fell short. Thankfully, it does not in the slightest. Whether it’s the amply sized snails, anchovy-topped pissaladiere flatbread, or something as simple as a gratin dauphinous side, the fulsome French flavours ooze in every mouthful. For mains, the duck burger is enormous but manageable thanks to a softening onion marmalade slathered inside the thick, sweet bun. There really isn’t much to dislike, even more so when the bill comes. While the likes of La Serre and La Petite Maison can rest easy in their supremely high-end thrones, Bistro Des Arts offers something still extremely worthy in the midmarket range.
