From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2011
Indian fast food is not your regular burger and fries. Travel to Mumbai and chaat stands selling pav bhaji, samosas, vada pav and other savoury snacks are a common sight. While it’s not quite the same experience in Dubai, Bombay Chowpatty in the heart of Karama is as close as it gets. It’s always packed in the evenings, usually with people from the Subcontinent (always a good sign of authenticity) catching up with friends over a cup of hot masala chai or ordering from the snack counter. Try the ‘vegetable frankies’ – mashed veggie cutlets wrapped in thin roti with spicy chutneys and sliced onions generously drizzled on. It’s filling enough and very spicy, but the dahi batata puri – a concoction of deep-fried bread mixed in with chutneys and yoghurt – easier on the tongue. The classic bhel puri is a the standout though, with just the right combination of puffed rice, vegetables and chutney. There’s a reason why Bombay Chowpatty is always busy, and it’s not just because of their extremely reasonable prices.
