Time Out Says
First piece of advice when heading to Catch 22 is to go hungry. This place is a prime location for getting ambitious, bigger-than-your-belly eyes when you begin to peruse the menu. To give this some sort of context, there’s an item menu called the “Jaw Breaker Burger” – which made it into our biggest burger list.
Struggling to determine what we want to eat, we’re baffled by an overwhelming selection of belt-busting bites. From sushi to seafood nachos, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups, and an impressively large tower of crispy golden onion rings, your options are almost limitless.
We often question when a restaurant covers so many different genres, however, we push the niggles aside and order a range of dishes.
We opt for the seafood nachos to start, which turns out to be as confusing as it sounds. Crab, white fish and shrimp sit among a sea of nachos, cheese, cheese sauce, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream – it’s an odd combination, and we’re not entirely convinced it works.
Next, the French onion chicken sandwich gets trapped in our hunter’s sights – which promises a grilled chicken sandwich served with Boursin cheese, melted pepper cheese, caramelised onions all stuffed into a brioche bun that’s fit to burst.
We can smell it arriving about ten metres before it hits the table, but sadly, we’re overwhelmed within the first bite. The amount of garlic and cheese is punishing, on many levels, and we find ourselves unable to get through it. It smells better than it looks, and it looks better than it tastes. An order of lobster rolls are also greasy and filling, and we feel heavier within minutes.
While a mixture of the various sushi and maki rolls on offer do go down nicely, with some fresh flavours to try, we’re verging on rolling out of the restaurant. Thanks to its prime beachside location, and funky interior design and lighting, Catch 22 is usually busy, but it’s quantity over quality at this “jack of all trades” eatery.
