Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Time Out Says

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Banking Street was full of football supporters when we called in to get our ‘Happy Hours’ discount. From an extensive list of coffees, teas and iced drinks we chose a cappuccino and an ice blended ‘sunrise’, a speciality of The Coffee bean. We enjoyed both, but especially the blend of orange juice, ice and French vanilla powder, which was probably not as healthy as we would have liked to believe.

The selection of savoury food is limited to just three choices of sandwich, three wraps, four salads and several quiches. My club cheese panini promised to be filled with fresh grated Cheddar and Emmenthal combined with fresh tomato. The three inch high slab of spongy focaccio style bread (nothing like a panini) had a layer of warm, gluey processed cheese sprinkled with a lot of powdered white pepper under some warm lettuce and tomato. It neither resembled the item described on the menu nor did it taste good. My companion’s chicken quiche was an over-browned wedge of undercooked pastry deep filled with an unappetising, greyish and dry mix of chicken and cheese, another disappointment.

Unable to resist the delectable looking cakes we delved into carrot cake and a cinnamon and walnut brioche. The cake was not great but the brioche was disastrous. A weighty three inch cube, it was made from rolled up dough spread with cinnamon and sugar. The ‘walnuts’ were in fact sultanas and the brioche was raw and sticky in the middle.

The venue is small and buzzing. Service is muddly and uncoordinated. The deal would be good value if the food was better.
