Colombiano Coffee House

Dubai’s first outlet from this Colombian coffee chain

Time Out Says

A new casual dining pitstop in the working-lunch hub of Dubai Media City, Colombiano Coffee House is a brand of cafés first started in Colombia. When we visited on a mid-office hours Tuesday lunchtime, a quick glance at both decor and menu told us that this was not so much a Colombian café, as Colombia’s answer to some of the better known coffee house chains.

The other diners in the café appeared to be also Media City workers on either a lunch hour or quick coffee break. The space had a fairly ordinary American style coffee chain appearance decorated in dark, redish tones, with the odd splash of scarlet and bold yellow. We took a seat and a look at the menu, to find a standard, but frankly uninspiring selection of salads, sandwiches, pizza, pasta and a few hot dishes. Unfortunately, several of the more interesting menu items were not available when we visited (including burgers and risottos).

We ordered the nachos from the appetisers to share, as well as a beef pepperoni pizza and chicken quesadilla as a main course. The nachos arrived as a large plate and were fairly liberally scattered with guacamole, mozzarella, soft white cheese, black olives and fresh slices of bell pepper. It has to be said, this creation had a fresher, lighter edge than the average molten-cheese laden nachos, but they were less than classic and made with tortilla-style crisps, seasoned with plenty of flavour enhancers. The pizza was not badly made, but the ratio of the thick layer of cheese to any other ingredient was heavy and the beef pepperoni slices had an unpleasantly fatty and artificial taste. The chicken quesadilla came with a bag of crisps tipped on to the plate and a few iceberg lettuce leaves. It was also heavily cheesy and while the chicken was a better bet than the beef pepperoni, the tortillas themselves were still floury and chewy and had undergone little exciting texture and colour change through temperature. The waitress, although friendly, was a little vague, and despite us making specific requests seemed to miss or misunderstand many of them. My friend, for example, had checked whether the quesadillas came with chips (as stated in the menu) or crisps (as she feared) and been assured it came with chips.

Despite being not far from our offices, I wouldn’t wonder down here for lunch in a hurry. There are not many appetising choices on the menu and the execution of the dishes we tried is not particularly tempting. Colombiano Coffee House could offer a new option for grabbing a caffeine hit if your office is in the area, or a lunch option during this very quiet time, but that is about it.

1x pepperoni pizza Dhs38
