Din Tai Fung
Time Out Says
And while the average dim sum devotee might not mind holding on that long to tuck into some little steaming dumplings, it can be less easy to convince those less familiar with the brand to wait around for so long.
But now the international Cantonese chain has a new branch at The Dubai Mall, promising stellar views, higher-end décor and a more family-friendly vibe.
Despite visiting during peak hours, we’re seated immediately. Like the Mall of the Emirates branch, the outside space is relatively no-frills – but indoors it’s all wood panelling and contemporary Far Eastern art on the walls.
The crowd here is a mix of families, tourists and solo diners lapping up the signature xiao long bao, and we’re not surprised.
When the hot, flavourful broth hits your taste buds you’ll understand what all the fuss is about.
The dumplings are presented in baskets of six, but it’s easy to over-order no matter how hard you try – especially considering that it’s just Dhs30 per serving.
Although everyone is here for the dim sum, there are also plenty of other staples on the surrounding menu including meaty soups and mountainous plates of noodles.
It’s a family-friendly spot, too, and the little ones will find plenty of familiar favourites, ranging from hearty chicken soups to noodles and even dumplings stuffed full of chocolate.
Notably excellent are the cheery staff, who are more than happy to explain the concept and even prepare a concoction of soy sauce, vinegar and ginger at the table for dipping those dim sum.
In another element of fun, orders are made by ticking off items on a little notepad, and the waiters are so quick and efficient at whooshing by and unloading the dumplings that you’ll scarcely notice they’re there.
All in all, it’s another hit for Din Tai Fung – with its unmissable blend of bargain authentic Chinese food.
We’re just glad the queues are all but gone (for now, anyway).
