Time Out Says
If you’re looking for a chilled-out spot for sushi, in a pretty al fresco location, then you’d do worse than visit Downtown Toko.
Housed at Vida Downtown Dubai, you’ll feel a world away from the city as you settle into the quaint spacious terrace, adorned with twinkling fairy lights, wooden decking, plenty of greenery and cotton canopies. Inside is a bustling open kitchen and upbeat music drifts out to the garden so you’re able to enjoy the lively mood along with your dumplings.
Service is swift and friendly, without being intrusive and food arrives promptly. Prices aren’t extortionate either – especially for women on a Wednesday ladies’ night, where you’ll get unlimited drinks from 7pm until 10pm to go with your meal.
The dishes, however, are a little hit and miss. Spicy edamame is overdone and soggy, however the fiery, garlicky sauce masks it slightly and sweetcorn tempura is tasty.
Avoid the chicken dumplings, however. Arriving in steamer stacks, the podgy little dumplings are filled with water, which is offputting. The veggie gyoza are a little better, though we’ve had better versions.
Carnivores will love the braised beef short rib which is juicy and tender.
The hero? Teriyaki avocado. Chargrilled with sea salt and teriyaki, the ubiquitous green fruit gets an Asian makeover and looks better for it at Toko.
With a charming setting and lively vibe, Toko is a lovely spot that’s let down by the food.
