El Sur

Popular Spanish spot with a busy bar

Time Out Says

Looking for Spanish food in Dubai? It’s fair to say you’re not exactly spoilt for choice. Europe’s sixth most populous nation is not particularly well represented in the city – both in scope and quality. But El Sur, which straddles both classic and contemporary Spanish cuisine, from all corners of the Iberian nation, sits among its most popular. Before dining, cast aside any happy holiday memories of tapas dishes for tapas prices – the small plates here start at just under Dhs50 a pop, running right up to a castanets-crunching Dhs100. While the food is absolutely good (save for during Friday brunch – avoid), the final bill can certainly ruin the flavour. Actually, the amount of oil in the paella means these particular dishes manage that on their own, so stick to the tapas. In winter, the terrace of the first-floor restaurant fills up, though diners will have to crane their necks for a glimpse of the Gulf, which laps the shores somewhere behind the enormous balcony obstructing the view. Summers, however, see the bar – positioned at the restaurant’s entrance – swinging most Thursday evenings. You’ll find its long communal tables packed with punters tucking into gambas al ajillo, tortilla de patatas, and the always-impressive berejena a la miel – aubergine filled with honey, soy and creamy cheese – and soaking up the flamenco soundtrack. Service is swift, if a little stony-faced, but on a busy night the atmosphere is generally uplifting. We just wish the price tag were a little more of that too.
