Time Out Says

If you’re tired of ordering the same old selection of mezze, Eshak is the perfect opportunity to mix things up a bit.

It’s all about Uzbeki and Middle Eastern fusion food, so you’ll find influences from across the region, and Eastern Europe. The décor is a mishmash of flowery embroidered seats, edgy modern art, and rustic wooden floors.

The music, too, veers from traditional Arabian to what sounds like pumping Russian house. Somehow, though, all of these different elements seem to work, and once we settle into the huge leather seats the place has a surprisingly chilled-out vibe.

Most of what we eat isn’t particularly memorable, but still perfectly enjoyable. The tabbouleh is punchy, the lamb mantas (Turkish dumplings) are juicy and the chebureki (a thin flatbread stuffed with cheese) is indulgent and comforting, even if it could use a bit more freshly chopped tomato.

The mixed grill, on the other hand, is standout, with supremely lean kebabs. The borscht soup follows suit. It’s warming and hearty, filled with fall-apart tender meat and chunky beetroot, and has that pleasant edge of pickled cabbage.

A spot worth visiting if you’re in the area and fancy trying something new.

The bottom line

A great place to sample Uzbek cuisine.
