Chef Paul Lupton of Rhodes Mezzanine fame was never a man to make a fuss – so much so, it’s only now that we’ve realised he’s left aforementioned restaurant to head up Rhodes 44 in Abu Dhabi. How did we find out about this? Not from an anonymous tip, press release or a change in the quality of the food at Mezzanine (which is still great), but from bumping into the man himself at a hazy night in Warehouse. That’s dynamic journalism for you. While we’re sad to see Paul go (after all, he helped Mezzanine to nab the Time Out Dubai Best Restaurant gong in 2010), we’re assured his successor, Giles Langford, will be equally industrious
in the kitchen.

While carousing in Warehouse is one way to garner tasty morsels of dining gossip, another more conventional way is by means of a good, old-fashioned invitation. It was through this means of communication that we discovered Alfie’s will open in Jumeirah Emirates Towers on Wednesday March 7. The opening party will doubtless coax the city’s beautiful people out of their daytime hidey-holes, until they move on to the Time Out Dubai Nightlife Awards after-party that very same night (naturally).

Cranking up the flux capacitor to fling us further ahead into the future, we find ourselves sipping premium bubbly for just Dhs395 at Spectrum on One’s fancy brunch. ‘Dhs395?’ we hear you scream hoarsely. Yes, Dhs395 – in celebration of the Fairmont’s 10th anniversary in Dubai. Alternatively you can enjoy food for only Dhs222 or selected beverages for Dhs385. If this is still out of your price range and you happen to be a recluse, then we recommend utilising your digits to call up sleek Chinese restaurant Chi’Zen, which is now offering delivery across Dubai (a whole roast duck will set you back Dhs99).

Moving off the couch and over to Le Méridien Mina Seyahi, you’ll see for yourself that the hotel is closed for refurbishment (d’oh! Should have stayed on the sofa!). Work started in early February and is due to continue until October, when the hotel will reopen to reveal new resaturants Latest Recipe, The Hub (not to be confused with The Hub at JBR) and Latitude Bar. Barasti, thankfully, is still open for business.

Having dispensed this dining information to you like a kindly aristocrat scattering gold coins at the feet of the poor, we gallop off to Hey Sugar! to gorge on Smartie Pants – a Smarties-covered cupcake, which you can sample for free on Monday March 5, providing you buy three other cupcakes. After all, there’s no such thing as a free lunch (unless someone else is paying). Bon appétit!
