We start this week with perhaps the most ‘Dubai’ news we can imagine. Sunday December 2 is UAE National Day, marking 41 years since the nation was founded. So what other edible celebration could Dubai have dreamed up except our favourite festive delicacy – the themed cupcake?

Cue two great bakeries with some special launches. Magnolia Bakery at Bloomingdale’s in The Dubai Mall is introducing festively decorated vanilla and chocolate buttercream varieties priced at Dhs14 each, available from Monday November 26 until National Day itself. Meanwhile, Maison Sucre has introduced cakes, cupcakes and cake-pops in the UAE national colours (red, green, white and black – no cake for you if you needed to be told that). We have our eye on the multi-tiered cake, in which the layers of vanilla sponge are coloured to match the flag. Maison Sucre cakes are available at Caboodle Café in Galeries Lafayette at The Dubai Mall.

If, however, you fancy a more old-school Dubai experience to celebrate National Day (which means a day off work for most), we’d highly recommend a jaunt down to Festival City for dinner at Al Fanar restaurant, a traditional Emirati venue.

Moving on to another anniversary, this week we’re celebrating the birthday of one of Dubai’s best Chinese restaurants. Hakkasan, Alan Yau’s modern Cantonese vision (and now global brand) made its way via London to Dubai’s Jumeirah Emirates Towers in November 2011, and celebrates its first birthday this month. Head there on Wednesday November 21 to try a special creation, dreamed up by the venue’s bartender, available free with your meal. Hakkasan’s terrace has also recently reopened to make the most of the fantastic autumn weather.

Across the road in DIFC, there’s news of a new restaurant scheduled to open in spring 2013. BOCA will focus on tapas-style sharing plates across a range of Mediterranean cooking styles, focusing on France, Italy and Spain.

Ahead of the Dubai International Film Festival, which takes place from Sunday December 9 until Sunday 16, we’ve found one cinema that is evidently aiming to up its edible game: Reel Cinemas in The Dubai Mall. First it was the health-conscious edamame, now the venue has introduced a special menu for Platinum Suite guests, which can be enjoyed either before or mid-screening. Devised by chefs at The Address Dubai Mall, dishes available include black Angus mini burgers, Greek salad, prawn dumplings and caramel and almond popcorn (at least popcorn makes it on to the menu).

Until next week, bon appétit!
