Dubai’s own truffle war has sparked up again, with bigger specimens of the prized white delight hitting the city, and restaurants shelling out ever increasing sums in order to pep-up our pasta. BiCE Mare has just got its hands on a mammoth 530g white truffle, making it the biggest truffle to enter the UAE and paying a staggering Dhs100,000 for it.
Having started early this year, it has been a particularly good season for white truffles, although larger specimens have been harder to find. Sourced by Dubai’s very own ‘truffle man’, Massimo Vidoni told Time Out there is still plenty of time left for the white truffle season (which typically ends in December) and he hopes to be getting hold of bigger and better specimens, to break his own record yet again. BiCE Mare’s chef Francisco Guarracino, who was texting at 4am to secure it, plans to create a special menu, with the truffle sold at cost for Dhs188 per gram.
In other news, music fans can cheer at the return of Wafi’s Opera in the Park taking place on Thursday November 21-22. Think UK opera event Glyndebourne, only in Dubai, with al fresco opera concerts taking place in Wafi’s rooftop gardens. Operatic entertainment is accompanied by a picnic basket, which will contain Scottish smoked salmon, apple celery and walnut salad, artisan breads, vintage cheeses and prawn cocktail, with a double chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Unlike Glyndebourne, however, these picnic baskets for two are included in the Dhs195 per person entry fee and include a welcome beverage.
Is it the weather? Or Dubai sloth syndrome? Pre-prepared picnic services seem to be de rigueur right now. Picnic fans can also head to the Al Badia Golf Club picnic brunch on Saturdays, which has just relaunched for winter. Also, new service Picnic Basket has also just launched, delivering a selection of sandwiches, snacks and drinks to Dubai’s office workers at lunchtime.
