Freebies for friends, cooking classes for children and build your own burgers

We’re on the brink of a new month now, and as August begins, the week ahead is crammed with new food events. Imperium kicks things off with a weekend programme crammed full of brunches, taking place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On an ongoing weekly basis, diners can try the ‘clique of élite’ event on Thursday evenings, which serves a selection of regional French cuisine, as well as the venue’s long-standing Friday brunch event and the New Orleans inspired Saturday afternoon brunch, which features jazz music.

And there is much more happening this week. The next edition of Sabado Coffee Club takes place over the weekend on Saturday August 2 at Spill the Bean. Sunday August 3 is apparently ‘International Friendship Day’. In celebration of this, Jazz@PizzaExpress is offering one free dessert to share, for diners who claim to be ‘best friends’ dining together at lunch or dinner time that day. If that inspires a new friendship, from Monday August 4, you can take them to the new dinner cabaret season at The Act Dubai. Taking place Monday-Wednesday each week, this month’s performances (which take place over dinner from the Peruvian menu) is called ‘Showtime’, since it takes inspiration from what happens behind the scenes when bringing a theatrical production to fruition.

Starting on Wednesday August 6 you can keep the kids busy as well with a new culinary camp at Lafayette Gourmet. Running until Wednesday August 27, the ‘Young Chef Club’ summer camp offers cooking classes for little ones. The events offer hands on tuition, and at some classes, kids have the opportunity to cook alongside their parents too. The theme of lessons varies from preparing food for children’s parties, a healthy eating look at fruits and vegetables, baking for beginners, and a look at new lunchbox ideas for parents. The August classes are open to children over six years of age, charged at Dhs75 per person, and advanced booking is advisable.
Also new for dining out this month is the ‘bolt on burger’ concept introduced from August 1 at Zero Gravity. This new menu promotion boasts a varied and creative selection of basic burger components, which diners can chose from to create their perfect burger, for a flat price of Dhs60. The menu includes choices such as black olive and sea salt, lemongrass and fried onion buns, wagyu beef or Thai-style chicken burger patties, as well as toppings including cheese, fried egg, crushed avocado, onion jam and more.

Finally, we leave you on a sweet note since Spanish spot Casa de Tapas has introduced a summer dessert menu. New dishes available to try include a citrus-themed dessert platter, coffee parfait with caramel ice cream and Valencia-style orange soup.
