Get ready for National Day and sharpen your Italian cooking skills

1/4

As proof that Dubai is the food capital of the Middle East, let’s start the week with news of next year’s biggest food fiesta. Dates have just been announced for the 2015 (and second-ever) edition of the Dubai Food Festival. This now annual event will launch on Friday February 6, running for 22 days until Saturday 28. The festival will kick off with the Beach Canteen pop-up at Kite Beach and continue with events throughout the month, such as Gulfood and Taste of Peru.

Winding our excitement back to this month, there is more patriotic news coming with National Day on the horizon. In celebration of this, BookMunch in Al Wasl Square has planned a whole week of Emirati breakfasts. You can sample this limited-edition menu from Friday November 28 until National Day on Tuesday December 2. Special themed cookies and books will be on sale too. The venue also has Christmas plans in store for little ones, with tree-lighting taking place on Wednesday December 3, gingerbread decorating from Thursday December 4 to Saturday 6 and festive-themed storytime from Thursday December 18 to Friday 19 (followed by more gingerbread decorating!).

Meanwhile, Jamie’s Italian at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is hosting cooking classes this month. On Saturday November 15 from 10am you can learn to make pasta, and on Saturday November 29, the restaurant will be teaching the secrets of dessert-making with recipes such as tiramisu and lemon meringue cheesecake. Each class costs Dhs299 per person and includes a glass of bubbly, a goody bag of ingredients and a certificate.

In case you can’t make these events, Italian cooking classes are continuing next month, with Nais Italian Kitchen in JLT holding a one-off lesson on Saturday December 13. Learn to prepare a three-course menu of Piedmontese delicacies, covering recipes for creating fresh pasta ravioli from scratch and baking foccacia bread as well as traditional dessert bunet (made with amaretti biscuits) and (for a festive touch) gingerbread biscuits. The class is limited to ten participants and costs Dhs400 per person. Sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also in JLT, a brand-new sandwich shop, Pressman’s, opened on International Sandwich Day (Monday November 2) in Cluster E, selling grilled sandwiches, made in a press (hence the name).

Finally, this month STAY by Yannick Alléno is celebrating caviar with a special menu featuring this delicacy in every course. The delicacy for December will be black truffles. Dishes on this five-course menu will include artichoke truffle gnocchi, velouté with truffle and black truffle ice cream for dessert. Priced at Dhs800 per person, this special menu will be available from Monday December 1 to Saturday 20.

Until next week, bon appétit!
