Pancake Day 2015 in Dubai, liquid nitrogen dining and more new concepts

Opening soon on Al Wasl Road is a brand new mall with a difference: Box Park. Uniquely, this group of eateries and fashion boutiques are housed within brightly coloured shipping containers – hence the name. The new mall is more than a kilometre long, and is a concept that has already been successful in London’s hipster-heartland Shoreditch, as well as in Paris and Christchurch in New Zealand. Among the eateries in Box Park is a second branch of Markette Restaurant & Crêperie, the café currently located in The Dubai Mall.

Also in Jumeirah is newly launched ice-cream ‘boutique’ Scoopi Café. Located on Jumeirah Beach Road near Jumeirah Beach Hotel, the venue specialises in ice-cream made using liquid nitrogen, which freezes in seconds (compared to hours required for traditional methods). You’ll find a variety of flavours, including medjool date and saffron, as well as handmade chocolates.

For more new flavours, head to Pullman Dubai Jumeirah Lakes Towers, where Amarillo Bar has just launched. The venue promises a late night menu of Mexican tapas, as well as music from regular Mexican DJs.

On the Boulevard, Armenian restaurant Mayrig has just introduced new dishes to the menu. Starting this month, the restaurant adds seafood, Armenian classics and desserts, including imam bayaldi (fresh eggplant, tomato and chickpeas), chunky fish gratin in a spicy tahini sauce, banirov maamoul (melted cheese stuffed cookie topped with syrup) and rose petal loukoum (ice cream).

Also in Downtown, Tolosa Bodega will be hosting a pop-up with a special guest chef from Sunday February 8-14. During this time, French chef Stephane Cedalle will take over the kitchen. His career as a chef has seen him work in the kitchens of Paris, Florida, Austria, Iceland and London, where he has worked for the likes of Gordon Ramsay (at Boxwood Café). Now, you can experience chef Stephane’s cooking for yourself in Dubai from this week.

Also starting this week, British pub D&A at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel will be marking the Six Nations rugby tournament with a themed snack platter. The sharing plate will include mini fish and chips, cold cuts, mature cheese, Scottish eggs and chips, plus two pints of hops, This deal will be available during the matches, which take place February 6-21, for Dhs150 a plate.

Later on this month, prepare to celebrate Pancake Day. Both branches of British eatery Rivington Grill (Souk al Bahar and Souk Madinat Jumeirah) are hosting special events on Shrove Tuesday (February 17), where diners can indulge in pancakes with lemon and sugar for just Dhs15, all day long.

Until next week, bon appétit!
