In a tweet: A low-key yet authentic Greek feast in Bur Dubai. Best for a relaxed, foodie brunch.
The venue: A comfortable, casual but stylish eatery with a chic, beachside vibe (impressive, considering the Bur Dubai location). Elia is divided into smoking (a bright conservatory space) and non-smoking areas (the main restaurant), decked out with white-washed tables and Mediterranean sea-blue soft furnishings.
The food: A set menu featuring a selection of classic Greek dishes – start with salad, tzatziki and a filo-encased ‘pie of the day’, followed by gyros, a sharing plate of souvlaki and home-made chips, and rounded off with a dessert of the day (a compote and ice-cream-topped rice pudding on our visit). Every dish is almost indecently tasty – and you’ll have to stop yourself ordering more of each course in order to save room for the next one. The only slight let-down is the souvlaki platter, which though tasty, features some unenjoyably fatty cuts of meat.
The drinks: Guests can sip a selection of house grape, shorts and hops, with an unusually varied selection of the latter.
The crowd: Elia’s brunch is laidback, and as such draws groups who are in it for the authentic food and a leisurely lunch rather than a raucous party. Expect families, groups of colleagues and couples.
The dress code: Smart casual seems to be the leaning of the crowd – though men can wear shorts, if they desire, without fear of being turned away.
The service: Friendly, if a little incessant. The eagerness to be doing something at all times means your cutlery, drinks glasses, bread baskets and anything else adorning the table can expect to be needlessly fiddled with.
Extras & entertainment: None, this one is all about the food.
Highs & lows: The early courses really make this brunch, but for us things tailed off towards the end.
The after party: In the same hotel, you’ll find Breathers bar and Barrels pub, so if you fancy carrying on, there’s no need to leave the property.
