Dubai foodie news

If you like sweets you’re in for a treat this week. We’ve also got some (for balance, of course) healthy eating news

We’ve developed a sweet tooth, with all the sugary news we have to share with you. First up, if you’ve ever had Willy Wonka envy, now’s your chance to try making your own crazy confectionary. Spun Candy has launched a new candy-making masterclass at Candylicious in The Dubai Mall. The classes are available to both kids and grown-ups and during the session you’ll learn about the science and step-by-step process of making sweets. There is a children’s lollipop masterclass and candy flower session, where you can create roses and lilies out of sugar. Students will also get a 15 percent discount on products and a souvenir apron.

In more sweet news, brand-new confectionary café Cocoa Room, which specialises in breakfast and sweet treats, has just opened at Galleria Mall on Al Wasl Road. Its menu is diverse, covering everything from scrambled egg money bags with shaved black truffle to red velvet pancake stacks.

Just a hop skip and a jump down Al Wasl Road, you’ll find another new eatery, this one dedicated entirely to fondue. Just opened at BoxPark, Melting Pot serves chocolate as well as cheese fondues. This Florida-born store also sells cheese varieties including Alpine Swiss, quattro formaggio and spicy fiesta cheese. Among the chocolate fondue options, you’ll find the ‘yin and yang’ fondue made with white and dark chocolate. A four-course set menu featuring cheese fondue, salad, a main course and dessert is also available.

Staying on Al Wasl Road, there are more new desserts to sample if you head to The Coffee Club at Wasl Vita Mall. The Australian café chain also has another branch in the Dubai Airport Freezone Authority. Recent additions to the dessert menu include granny’s apple crumble made with cinnamon and caramel and served with vanilla ice-cream, the brownie fudge delight – a triple chocolate brownie served with cream and crumbled biscuits, vanilla ice-cream, and chocolate sauce, banoffee in a jar made with fresh bananas, toffee butter biscuits and whipped cream – and finally, a new tiramisu made with coffee, mascarpone and sponge.

After all this sugar you may be in the mood to boost your diet with healthy eating options. In which case, you’ll be happy to know that Ripe Market is back and with a brand-new location. Once a month, Ripe will be running pop-up stalls on Thursday evenings at BurJuman. The next event takes place on Thursday September 17 from 5pm until 10pm. You’ll find fresh food items for sale, such as organic kale and locally produced eggs as well as a number of arts, crafts and fashion items such as locally made bikinis and sunglasses made with wooden frames.

Until next week, bon appétit!
