The venue: The bright white decor of the dining room is oddly clinical, but not distasteful. The venue is clean, neat and simple, and tables are well-spaced, which is particularly welcome on the occasions when it becomes a bit rowdy. Some tables boast decent views of Media City as well. A welcome card with the booker’s name prefaced by the word ‘Lovely’ is a cheesy but charming touch.
The food: For a brunch that is not about the fare, the international buffet is varied and of a good enough standard that those who have been dragged out to a work function can have their fill and leave feeling satisfied. Roast dinners, pizzas and a good array of salads should suit most palates.
The drinks: The house beverages package includes bottled hops, white and red grape, some fizzy grape-based drinks and the usual mixed beverage suspects. Staff will knock up a version of your favourite mixed drink if it is not included in your deal. The bubbly package is probably priced too high for most, given the modest surroundings.
The crowd: A mix of dressed-up divas and casual carousers of all ages fill tables great and small. You should feel comfortable with a group of colleagues, family members, sports teammates and friends alike.
The dress code: Very casual. Shorts are allowed and though flip-flops are technically not, we saw several guests wearing them on our last visit. Most guests choose to dress up a bit.
The service: Drinks will be placed in front of you before you have finished your last, while the buffet never runs too low.
Extras & entertainment: A DJ plays non-intrusive party music in the background to get the brunch started. About an hour or two in, the karaoke starts up, and revellers who have no business near a microphone are encouraged to belt out their favourite tunes.
Highs & lows: The simple surroundings and diverse crowd make for a relaxed atmosphere. But, while the buffet and drinks packages represent decent enough value for money, there are cheaper brunches that tick the same boxes.
The after party: Dek on 8 and its garden has a relaxed post-brunch atmosphere, while Q43 is an elevator ride away for those with the stamina to make a night of it.
