This offering by the Mövenpick in JBR is a game of two very distinct halves. Firstly, there’s the family-friendly feast served up at The Talk, complete with kids’ corner to keep the little ones entertained.
Secondly, there’s the more refined, adult-orientated affair in Soul, where you’ll be within tantalising distance of the pièce de resistance, the chocolate library (we’ll speak more of that later).
The main USP of this brunch seems to be “Around The World in 80 Ways”, a celebration of global cuisine which changes weekly. On our visit, the chef has rustled up three specials – a foie gras terrine, soft shell crab and oyster Rockefeller, all of which are made to order and brought to the table. The terrine is the real standout – so good, in fact, that we order another two portions immediately.
Meanwhile, the main buffet section is full of the usual international fare, with appearances from the likes of sushi, Arabic, seafood and a good old British roast.
However, we are keeping room for the aforementioned dessert collection, with an eye on one element in particular.
As a warm-up, or cool-down, to the finale we tuck into some of Mövenpick’s own-brand ice cream, but the best is still to come. Having already been invited to take a tour of the chocolate library by pastry chef Pravin, the sheer aroma of which would have many in a cocoa-induced frenzy, it is here that we find our highlight.
Plenty of thought and effort has been put into each delicate dessert and from every bite, you can see why the chef takes such pride in his work.
Throw in a polished jazz duo and you have a very pleasant Friday afternoon all round.
Dh289 (soft drinks) Dhs389 (house beverages). Fri-12.30pm-4pm. Buffet. Mövenpick Hotel, JBR, The Walk (04 449 8888).
The Bottom Line
A solid all-rounder with some pleasant surprises.
