Brunch

Tucked away in the corner of Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates is Salero, an intimate Spanish restaurant. The room isn’t the largest, but it’s split into a smoking and non-smoking area with seats around the bar, where you can also see some of the food being cooked. Typical Spanish tapas dishes and paella can be ordered over and over again until you are ready to explode like a piñata (we know, that’s Mexican). A platter of meat and cheese will be brought to your table before ordering anything, alongside Salero’s fantastic tomato bread. Then choose from hot or cold tapas. A cold beetroot soup with goats’ cheese and almonds is a surprising favourite, as is the tuna ceviche. Hot chicken and cheese croquettes also hit the spot, while sautéed shrimps and braised beef ribs are also winners. If you have room, any of the desserts will finish the brunch nicely. Traditional Spanish grape-based mixed beverage is available in limitless supply but this is a brunch to enjoy at a leisurely pace. A Spanish guitarist and singer plays while you eat – he is excellent and pitched at just the right volume. Despite being at Mall of the Emirates, Salero feels secluded and calm – it almost feels like you’ve stumbled on to a cool private party. It’s not fine dining but the service and entertainment are great and the food is enjoyable.
Dhs295 (Spanish mixed beverage and soft drinks), Dhs350 (house beverages and Spanish mixed beverages). Fri 1pm-4pm. Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, Barsha (04 409 5888).
