Loca is a long-standing favourite for Mexican food in Dubai, and the opening of its second branch in Souk Al Bahar was met with much fanfare. But sadly the brunch offering at Loca 2.0 has yet to reach the heights set by its older sister.
Unfortunately for Loca 2.0, being in tourist favourite Souk Al Bahar hasn’t yet resulted in much footfall due to the entrance being outside and hidden away in a corner. But this surely won’t matter too much once the location becomes better known.
The packages are good value here, with Latin American mixed drinks and hops available with the selected beverages option. But when it comes to the food, the offerings at this brunch don’t live up to the restaurant’s reputation.
Everything is served à la carte, but lacks the freshness you’d expect from Loca. The only real standouts are the guacamole (mixed and served at your table) and the main courses that you can order from the menu. But away from these options, everything else is pretty average.
The less-than-spectacular food wouldn’t be such an issue if there was a lively atmosphere, but the overall experience is compounded by the quietness and lack of diners. On our visit, a live band was promoted on a chalkboard, but didn’t materialise. It can be quite eerie as well due to the lack of punters, although the terrace is a lovely and private spot.
It’s important to remember that this is a relatively new restaurant, and there’s clearly potential within the brand to pull it off. As for now, this is a disappointing attempt at brunch.
