Dish of the week: Avocado on toast

We check out the menu at chef Thomas Keller’s new bakery at The Beach

There’s nothing more pleasing to the city’s foodies than when a chef whose restaurants already have seven stars decides that Dubai is the place they want to be. Enter, Thomas Keller.

The first outlet of Keller’s French bistro, Bouchon, opened in Yountville, California, in 1998. There are now Bouchon Bakeries in New York, Las Vegas and Beverly Hills.

The idea for the bakery was born while Keller was in his 20s and working in Paris, living above a boulangerie.

“Whether it’s a crusty, freshly baked loaf of bread or a simple meal skilfully crafted from the highest quality ingredients, these places pull Parisians together to dine and discuss their lives,” he says.

“I can’t take you back with me to that room above the boulangerie, but I can give you the best of those memories – the sights, smells and flavours.”

This new outlet at The Beach, opposite JBR, is Keller’s first venture in the UAE. The bakery boasts a counter packed with pastries, sandwiches and brightly coloured macarons, plus signature baked goodies including Bouchons – rich, chocolatey brownies filled with chocolate chips. There are also salads, soups and buttery croissants, all freshly made.

Breakfasts include this on-trend avocado on toast. However, it’s not your average avo offering, as the smashed fruit is layered on home-baked artisan toast, spread with piquillo marmalade. It’s topped with pickled red onion and a scattering feta.
