With such a variety of brunches on offer in Dubai, restaurants are continually striving to do something outside of the norm. Al Dawaar is immediately in a prime position for this, its USP being that it’s the only revolving restaurant in the city. A brunch with views that change constantly while you eat? Surely we’re on to a winner here? We’re excited to see.
The restaurant is set on the 25th floor of the Hyatt Regency Dubai. Not so high in terms of some of the sky-scraping dining rooms, but a bird’s-eye view nonetheless.
Al Dawaar opened in 1980, and is therefore something of a landmark on the culinary scene. However, thanks to a refurbishment last year, it’s not at all dated. In fact, it’s modernm fresh and bright.
The rotation takes around an hour and a half and you have a top view out across Old Dubai, the Creek and to the Burj Khalifa and skyscrapers in the distance (just ignore the construction directly around).
Time passes quickly as we brunch. It’s a casual occasion, and the price point is also surprisingly wallet friendly given the setting and standard of dishes on offer.
Having admired the view for a bit, we venture to the buffet, remembering where our table is as the food stays central while the seating area rotates.
We start off with a range of salads and mezze. The Greek salad is a hit – packed full of chunks of feta and olives.
Mains come in the form of a carving station and a range of hot dishes such as tandoori chicken, grilled lobster and moussaka, which is delicious.
There are also three live cooking stations – Indian, Italian and Asian. We opt for a vegetable curry and five minutes later it arrives at our table with some freshly made naan bread. It’s delicious – rich and packed full of flavour.
Full and happy, we relax and enjoy the views and slow-paced rotation (which soon becomes the norm, despite concerns of motion sickness).
Al Dawaar doesn’t just rely on its wide-ranging views to sell its brunch -– the food and service match up.
