If you’re not a morning person, Daddy’s barbecue at Cuisinero Uno, which starts at 3pm, offers the ultimate lie-in. Or, you could use the later start time as an opportunity to hit the gym, so when you’re filling your face with grilled meat, you’ll feel like you’ve earned it.
With sweeping views over Dubai Water Canal from its outdoor terrace, Cuisinero Uno at Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay is an ultra-cool, ultra-contemporary space. It has a raw industrial edge with its metallic furniture, exposed piping and brickwork, and graffiti scrawled artistically across the walls.
The restaurant is also big on sustainability. It grows some of the herbs used in your food in a greenhouse on the terrace through the method of hydroponics – where plants use nutrients from fish waste instead of soil to grow. It feels modern and on-trend.
It’s not busy, perhaps owing to its 3pm start, but if you’re celebrating with a big group, or you want to groove to the DJ’s funky beats with friends, it’s a good choice.
Thankfully, it isn’t all style over substance, either. Cuisinero Uno is a family business and you get that tight-knit vibe from staff, who all muck in to provide top service and make you feel properly looked after.
Former Time Out Dubai Young Chef of the Year finalist John Buenaventura, who was also chef de cuisine at Seafire, heads it up, so it’s with high expectations that we wait for food to arrive. And it doesn’t disappoint.
The beauty of this brunch is that you can order as much from the day’s à la carte menu as you like, as many times as you like. To begin, we go for the medley of beans and corn with pomegranate, which is light, zingy and refreshing. We also opt for nachos with cinema-style liquid cheese, tomato salsa and guacamole, and a creamy potato salad made with Dijon mayo, celery and chives. It’s deliciously smooth with a slight tang and is the highlight of the small plates.
Mains mean meat, and lots of it. Staff will bring you plates of sliced brisket, two kinds of sausages and succulent grilled chicken. There’s also a sweet, sticky and incredibly tasty honey-glazed, mustard-flavoured salmon, which will tempt you to have seconds.
And with sides of a fragrant, cheesy and indulgent truffle mac ’n’ cheese, garlic and herb bread, baked potatoes with cream cheese, jambalaya rice pilaf and spicy Cajun fries, this afternoon feast is a foodie’s dream – and extremely filling.
If by 6pm you still have room for dessert, the light, creamy tiramisu is real hit, too.
