New restaurant: Bao Wow

We check out the menu at new Asian eatery Bao Wow

There are few things more comforting than a hot, fluffy bun, stuffed full of fresh and tasty fillings. And now, when the bao cravings strike, there’s a new restaurant dedicated especially to their hearty goodness.

Bao Wow is now open in City Walk – in the space that previously housed Dragonfly from Michelin-starred German chef Tim Raue. The new eatery remains (vividly) red, but now serves up traditional and modern dishes stemming from across China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

The team is led by chef Stefan Niermann and we’re promised “vibrant presentation and a unique approach to Asian-style cooking”. This is reflected in the restaurant’s colourful interiors, which feature work by Dubai-based graffiti artist Ramy Elzaghawy.

It’s described as a mixture of “urban grit and relaxed Asian cool”, and the team also promise it’s pocket-friendly, with a meal for two coming in at around Dhs150.

The name is inspired by the fluffy Asian buns we all love, which star on the menu. They come packed with a variety fillings, including chilli beef, tofu, Peking duck and this teriyaki chicken. Served with miso slaw, crispy shallots and toasted sesame seeds, it’s on our to-eat list.

And, if you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t miss the Nutella dim sum, which comes with raspberry and vanilla ice cream.

Everything will be served with flair, so expect plumes of dry ice to go with your food. We’re ready to be (bao)wowed.
Open daily 11.30am-midnight. City Walk, Al Safa Street (04 342 7044).
