Figaro’s Pizza

Cheesy pizza spot in Jumeirah Beach Residence

Time Out Says

‘We Use 100 per cent real cheese’ screams the giant sticker in the neon-lit window. Another, rather forceful, poster shouts, ‘We’ll Bake It For You, Or You Can Bake Your Own!’ We decided to let Figaro’s do the baking for us, and kept our fingers crossed that it would fulfil its promise in regards to the cheese.

We settled into one of the booths in the cafeteria-esque joint, with giant glowing pictures of the wide variety of pizzas adorning the walls, a counter stretching the entire length of one side and wide-screen TVs showing music videos. There is a balcony with a view of The Walk and beach beyond, which is sure to draw in the customers once the weather cools.

However, as soon as my date and I had taken a seat we were told by the apologetic waitress that they only accepted cash at the moment. So, realising we had a grand total of Dhs20, I ventured round the maze of JBR in search of a cash machine. Twenty hot-and-sweaty minutes later I stormed back through the doors and sat down to find my greedy date had already had his starters and was halfway through his mains. I huffily asked the waitress to warm up my food, sat back and hoped the grub would be good enough to lift my mood.

Thankfully, the breaded cheese sticks were suitably crisp on the outside, hot, gooey and stringy on the inside, if a little bland. The garlic bread with cheese was comforting stuff, especially when dipped in the accompanying tomato salsa (which also added flavour to the cheese sticks). Unfortunately, my pizza was where it fell apart. It could have just been my choice, but being the Figaro’s Special, it should have been one of its best. There were three bases to choose from. I picked the thin one, hoping for a crispy, light pizza, but all it resulted in was an overpowering taste of topping, consisting primarily of huge circles of beef under the cheese. What resulted was a pizza that tasted somewhat like a ham and cheese sandwich. My date’s choice fared better, the creamy garlic chicken was a tasty topping, although, coupled with the doughy deep-pan base, got a bit sickly after a few slices.

For dessert we looked forward to the promise of a slice of cherry pie, only to be told the only one available was strawberry, and so we settled for another one of the delicious fruit ice-cream smoothies. By the end of the dinner, my mood had lifted after all – maybe it was the 100 per cent real cheese.
