Time Out Says
This friendly pub recently underwent a makeover, and it’s done it a world of good.
On previous visits the food has been a bit of a let-down. But the revamp of Girders Garden, and its separation into a standalone venue, has led to an equally decent freshening up of the menu. It has become more refined and more intelligent – with less emphasis on heavy, cheesy carby dishes.
A pub garden, but indoors, there’s both a smoking and non-smoking section and there’s a bustling post-work crowd on our visit to the JBR bar.
The menu consists of a range of salads (including quinoa, seafood, burrata and more), while there’s plenty of freshly grilled meat and fish, too.
The US beef foot-long hot dog is no stale-bun-and-fried-onions job, it takes on a sophisticated edge, with a beautifully soft, brioche bun, peppered with chives and jalapeños, plus an artistic drizzling of Dijon mustard mayo. It’s tasty and grown-up.
The tiger prawns, too, taste as fresh as you could hope for, served up alongside a fennel salad, lemon butter and fries.
Don’t miss the desserts, either. We save enough room for the wildly ambitious maple bacon s’mores. Yes, bacon and s’mores, which s’mehow go together like they were meant to be. The sweet-savoury combo is surprisingly tasty.
With dishes a step up from average pub grub, this spot in JBR is well worth a visit to check out it’s new look.
