Time Out Says
2019 was the year of all-vegan restaurants and Gypsy joined that movement by opening not one but two branches.
The newest venue in The Dubai Mall is bigger and more ambitious than the original in Dubai Marina.
Tucked away in a corner of the food court at Galeries Lafayette this restaurant is easy to miss but we recommend you seek it out.
Service is a little complicated, but when we do eventually order the food arrives promptly and is worth the lengthy wait.
The jackfruit wings, available in spicy, barbecue or sweet and sour, are utter perfection. Six giant pieces of jackfruit are smothered in sauce (we go with the barbecue) and served with a spicy mayo sauce, it’s definitely a portion made for sharing.
The fish burger catches our eye (vegan fish and chips in burger format? Yes please) and nothing beats a classic shepherd’s pie.
Both mains are tasty, however, there is some room for improvement with the pie, perhaps a bit too much potato and not enough filling, plus veg on the side wouldn’t go a miss. The side salad it arrives with is nice but a bit out of place.
The burger doesn’t taste like fish but looks-wise is spot on and comes with a generous heaping of mushy peas and a big pile of chunky chips.
If you’ve managed to save room for dessert you’re in luck – the lotus cheesecake is not to be missed, sweet, rich and moreish.
We can’t wait to come back and try out more fun options.
