Time Out Says

Nando’s has a lot to answer for. In a brilliant swoop for domination of the grilled chicken market, it came, it clucked, it conquered. From footballers to film stars and musicians, all are ardent followers. And, as always, where celebrities tread, mere mortals follow.

However, the global chain is not the only place in Dubai to get your grilled chicken, and in JLT’s Highway 311 Grills, we have a new casual, great-value eatery that specialises in poultry. There are salads, burgers, flatbreads and a handful of veggie options, as well a wings and grills. Most dishes on the menu come with a side, a house salad and a soft drink, which makes for a bargain meal no matter what you order.

Chicken can be summoned by the quarter, half or whole, with a choice of seven marinades or rubs, and it is here that Highway 311 has the edge. Whatever spice or flavouring you prefer, there will be something here for you – the variety includes US barbecue, spicy African, and Arabic seven spice.

We choose a quarter of jerk chicken – enough for one person – with a side of herbed rice. The house salad and rice is fine, but not spectacular, but the chicken is juicy, the skin crispy and the flavour spot on.

For another way to try the flavours, we order a portion of wings. The African pili pili is best left to the seasoned chilli-lovers, as it leaves one of us gasping for breath (our dining buddy loves it).

The Arabic seven spice prawns with sweet potato wedges come as a mound of great-tasting, shellfish, but the wedges are a little dry.

Poultry fans, this is worth adding to your regular haunts. While the sides aren’t stunning, serving up such tasty chicken at great value is a real coup.

The Bill (for two)
4x pili pili chicken wings Dhs20
1x jerk chicken (quarter bird) Dhs35
1x Arabic seven spice prawns Dhs49

The bottom line
If chicken is your thing, this budget-friendly eatery is well worth trying.
