This Vietnamese restaurant strives to place itself among the upper echelons of Asian dining spots. And for the most part it fits. The dining room looks classy and sophisticated in deep reds with dark wood furniture and the clientele it attracts matches – as do the prices. Staff are enthusiastic, helpful and eager to please. But it’s the finer detail that is lacking. Staff know the menu well but lack that air of confidence when asked for recommendations. As for the food, the presentation and portion sizes are all akin to fine dining, but the quality and taste just isn’t quite up there in all the dishes. That’s not to say it’s bad at all, the wok-fried organic chicken with lemongrass, shallots, chilli and XO sauce and the grilled black cod with miso sauce, enoki mushrooms, fried onions and garlic are delicious, moreish and clearly of high quality. It’s small details, such as too much sauce rendering dishes too salty, that let them down. Considering you’re going to pay upwards of Dhs600 for a meal for two, you want the food to be above average. Hoi An has the potential for very good things, and for a formal meal or if you have guests in town, it certainly won’t let you down.
