Time Out Says

There are a multitude of restaurants in Dubai that serve sushi – but few that do it in such a traditional way as Höseki.

With only nine seats (plus a private dining room), this petite, intimate restaurant is ideal for sushi aficionados.

If your other half really loves Japanese food then we highly recommend Höseki as a date spot that’ll rack up serious partner points.

Word of warning, this doesn’t come cheap (we’re talking into the thousands – this is Bvlgari Hotel) but it’s the most authentic and intimate experience in the city, hands down. You’ll be treated to a private chef per couple who will choose what dishes you dine on that night.

The room is simple and extremely quiet – if you’re afraid of silence look away now. But really it’s because the food does the talking. You don’t need pumping beats or fancy décor, the dishes are expressive enough on their own. And they’re interesting, too, so you won’t need to struggle for conversation. Should that happen, then stare out the windows – there’s also a top view of Burj Khalifa.

Take your seat and prepare to make your way through whatever fish and seafood is fresh that day – flounder, yellow jack, blue fin, squid – it’s all exquisitely prepared and super-fresh.

Chat with your chef, it’s the best way to get to know the dishes. They’re friendly, knowledgable and you’ll learn a thing or two about the art of sushi making. Wasabi is grated in front of you (in case you didn’t know the often violently green paste actually comes from a root) and the knifework is impressive.

The sushi is totally authentic – you won’t find any mayo-laden California rolls here. Japanese sardine, sea eel, horse mackerel – fish is unusual and interesting.

It’s not mainstream, however, so prepare to have your expectations and taste buds challenged – there’s sure to be something served up you haven’t tried before.

If you have adventurous tastes, deep pockets and want to try authentic Japanese at its best, this is a no-brainer.
