Hush Burger

Excellent burger joint with artery-hardening meat feasts

Time Out Says

‘Hush’ is an apt name for a burger joint – after all, whispers suit guilty pleasures, and Hush Burger’s menu is largely restricted to the kind of juicy burgers that make you want to scrub out your arteries after consumption. No, there’s nothing gourmet about these patties. They’re classic heart-stopping fodder. And while there’s a part of you that wants to eat these beasts in some secluded corner, the decor of the burger bar is endearing enough to charm diners into eating in. When my date and I arrived, faint from hunger, we were calmed by the presence of the sole waitress, a slim Filipina wearing an oversized black cowboy hat. The soundtrack favoured Willie Nelson and the Dixie Chicks, and the walls were covered in horseshoes.

There are seven burger orders to choose from, and all but one have a name. There’s the Rex (with bacon and cheese), the Ringo (just cheese), the Marshal (mushrooms), the Wayne (plain), the Big Johan (a double burger) and the Cooper (one of every burger). Oddly, they didn’t give a name to the Arabian burger, which comes served on Arabic bread. We ordered up a Marshal and a Rex, and paired each with chilli cheese fries and, incongruously, fresh squeezed juice.

These were messy burgers, the kind of thing you’d down in the wee hours after hitting the clubs and the Stoli (it’s fitting that Hush Burger stays open until 2am). This wasn’t a perfect burger. You don’t get to choose how you want it cooked, the bun could have been a bit softer and a bit warmer, and the patty itself is awfully dense. It does get credit for its seasoning: the meat is laced with parsley, and the special ‘Hush souce’ [sic] helps make it a drooly, sloppy haven of comfort. The fries are good on their own: medium-thick and well crisped. I can’t say I’m too sold on the chilli cheese combo though; I found the chilli, though possessing a reasonable kick, too dry.

At the end of our meal, the owner came out and gave us each some Mars chocolates and our very own Hush porcelain mug. We were further endeared. While we couldn’t visit a place like this too often, it’d make a nice stop after a night out or a hard day.
