International House of Pancakes: America’s version of the greasy spoon
  • 1

Time Out Says

Sitting in IHOP (International House of Pancakes), you may find yourself wondering why you would open a new restaurant, in a city enamoured of the new, and design it like a ’70s greasy spoon, with Formica tables and varying orangey tones of brown? This old-school, outmoded vibe continues with IHOP’s unlimited coffee, which arrives in a thermos flask and tastes watery and insipid. In contrast, the highly recommended Strawberry Splashberry juice could do with a little watering down to temper the plasticky sweetness. Breakfast dishes arrive looking like fairly standard American greasy-spoon equivalents, yet are pretty hearty in size. They’re the sort of heavy-duty, cost-effective breakfast that the hard-working American dockers in On the Waterfront would have eaten, back in 1958, when the first IHOP opened. Perhaps a modern equivalent in Dubai is the plight of morning-after partygoers, and in that context an IHOP fix could be just as effective, if unexciting.
