Time Out Says

Meaning “The Lighthouse” in Italian, the name Il Faro is apt, as you can’t miss this quaint building set out at sea.

Painted in blues and whites this pretty eatery, in the shape of its namesake, houses a bar and pizzeria, perfect for lunch or dinner. And, when the weather allows, the circular terrace is an ideal spot from which to gaze out to sea while enjoying some top Italian fare.

Il Faro is split into two sections, with solely pizza and Italian bites (think arancini, fried olives et al) being served in the lighthouse section.

If you’re after fine dining, the Trattoria is housed in the building opposite, but despite a longer menu, it’s not quite as appealing, with bright lighting and less of a view. We head for the lighthouse, as it has more of a buzz about it and because we’re in the mood for pizza (but when are we not?).

Despite being June, it’s not so hot to prevent us sitting outside, where every table is taken. It’s a spot that’s as suitable for date night as it is for a mates’ night.

We start off with seafood skewers and calamari. Both the portions are sizeable, but not overly heavy, and are very tasty.

The pizza menu is fairly extensive – and reasonably priced – and after much deliberation we settle for a calzone (the speciality) and a veggie pizza.

The latter is loaded with mushrooms, artichokes and olives and is also huge. The base is perfectly blistered, crisp, authentic and not too doughy.

The calzone isn’t puffed up as much as some we’ve tried (therefore it looks less like a giant Cornish pasty) but is stuffed with creamy ricotta, provolone and mozzarella – a cheese-lover’s dream.

Defeated by the carb and cheese fest, we decline dessert, but sit longer to enjoy the views.

Lighthouses are made to be noticed, and Il Faro certainly should be on your radar.
