Time Out Says

Kanpai is slick and dark and feels sophisticated through and through, illuminated by deep blue, purple and orange lights. Japanese is the prevailing theme; you’re greeted in Japanese by the waiters and chefs as you enter and Samurai-style warriors stand guard over proceedings around the premises. The menu is also predominantly Japanese, featuring a diverse range of sushi, beef and tuna tataki, beef and chicken teriyaki and black cod. There’s also a smattering of Thai (green curry and pad Thai noodles), Vietnamese (summer rolls) and Chinese (noodles). We’ve sampled better versions of black cod in the city, but Kanpai’s is still a very fine rendition – fall-apart, buttery, sticky and sweet. It goes down a treat. The inventive sushi rolls are a must – the dynamite maki and wagyu beef roll being playful and flavoursome takes on more traditional rolls, the former featuring a smoky barbecued eel and the latter having cheese and a topping of tender, grilled wagyu beef. The fresh, distinctive and bold flavours collide nicely, creating wholly distinctive tastes. Staff are excellent, guiding you through the menu and offering thoughtful suggestions, and know when to leave you alone and offer the bill. A solid Souk Al Bahar choice.
