Totally authentic Japanese in Garhoud

Time Out Says

Kiku has been around for donkey’s years, and for good reason. The longstanding Japanese eatery in Garhoud is as authentic as it gets, amid Dubai’s more fusion-focused spots.

With the speciality ingredients being flown in from Hokkaido, Kansai, Nagano and the markets of Tsukiji, the menu offers typical Japanese dishes, from freshly prepared sushi and yakitori barbecue, plus ramen, hot pot, cold noodle dishes and more.

On our visit, the unassuming spot is packed to the brim, with the majority of the diners being from Japan itself – a good sign in our books – and it reminds of us somewhere you’d find tucked away on a hidden street in Kyoto.

And the authenticity doesn’t end with the food. There’s an open sushi counter so you can watch the skilled chefs at work, a live teppanyaki table (which is loads of fun and should be tried), traditional Japanese-style rooms with tatami mats, menus written in Japanese and a variety of more than 20 Japanese beverages.

Prices are friendly on the wallet and the food is flavourful and simply presented – there are no bells and whistles here, just a focus on tasty food. Service is swift and friendly, too.

If you’re after an authentic taste of Japan without having to fork out a bucketload on air fares – Kiku is well-worth a visit.
