Kim’s Singapore Seafood

A brilliant, family-friendly al fresco seafood spot

Time Out Says

The Beach Boxpark, City Walk and now Al Seef – they’re the Meraas developments each slightly distinct, yet equally familiar to one another. To us, the only differences are the locations and the time it takes to reach each in a taxi. You’ll find many good cafés, restaurants, hole-in-the-walls and food stalls in them, but it’s rare that you’ll find a spot you’ll be desperate to come back to over and over again.

However, Kim’s Seafood might just persuade us otherwise.

It’s an al fresco, family-friendly Singaporean spot where you just know the food is going to be top-notch at the first glance of the menu. But you’ll need to find it first, so keep your eyes peeled, especially in the midst of the growing crowd numbers heading out to the Creek in this winter weather. Find icecream parlour London Dairy and look out for either a non-descript wooden door where a lift lurks behind or clamber up the steps to the wonderful terrace. Failing that, follow your nose to the wafts of spice or your ears to the sounds of “oohs” and “aahs” coming from diners.

That’ll be us. Once inside, beaming staff guide us to our table and we have our first taste of good things to come at Kim’s: it’s one of Dubai’s few licensed restaurants not in a hotel. Plus, we’re in the middle of the daily two-for-one happy hour that runs 5pm to 8pm.

Seafood, especially shellfish, takes centre stage here. We punt for the fried hokkien prawn mee (recommended as the kitchen’s signature dish) and the black pepper chicken bee hoon. Both noodle-based dishes, both hugely different, both slurped up with barely a moment’s breath.

For us, the spicier, bolder chicken dish outshines the speciality – however, the prawns on the other are big enough to pull up a seat and join us for dinner. They’re enormous.

This authentic Singaporean spot has been cultivating a reputation for terrific crab – and rightly so judging by Kim’s special fried rice. The dish is bursting with large pieces of crab meat and gets the seal of approval from our littlest diner at the table, who makes sure every last chunk is stuffed into their mouth without waste. Now that’s even rarer.
