Kyo Restaurant & Lounge

Pleasant Japanese eatery that has plenty of potential

Time Out Says

PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Nestled away in Golden Mile One is Kyo. As expected (being summer, although it isn’t easy to find either) the restaurant is quiet. However, the stark interiors are traditional and the friendly staff help the vibe.

Kyo also boasts a lovely outdoor lounge area, filled with comfy sofas, which in cooler weather will be a great spot. Though we can’t help thinking it would be more popular if it had a license (the venue says it’s looking into it).

The menu is wide-ranging but not overfacing. From sushi and salads to robata and teppanyaki, if you like Japanese food, you’ll be well-catered for here.

Sushi is fresh and well presented – we love the tempura shrimp maki rolls. We can never resist a gyoza, but despite being well flavoured, the buttery black cod version is on the rich side.

Heading to mains, small strips of Angus tenderloin are tender and tasty, while the jumbo shrimp are fresh and meaty.

Dishes are all good quality, but somehow don’t wow, and with the total coming in at around Dhs500 without drinks (and not large portions), it’s pretty hefty for what we expect to be a casual midweek meal.

We’ll be making the most of a deal (such as all-you-can-eat sushi Saturday to Monday for Dhs139) next time, and we’d suggest you do, too.

The bottom line
Fresh and authentic, but pricey, food.
