Le Frenchy

Cliché-laden French restaurant and bar

Time Out Says

With a name like Le Frenchy, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this spot in Dubai Marina is massively gimmicky with less-than-authentic French fare. And you’d be right, in some aspects.

The clichés are abundant – from the Eiffel Tower-shaped table legs, to the red, white and blue décor, even down to the mopeds parked in the corner, none of which shouts “classy”.

When it opened in early September, Le Frenchy, in the Marina Byblos Hotel, promised to “bring a unique taste of France”.

But when we arrive, we’re not filled with certainty that we’re in for a meal the French would be proud of. The massive space is dominated by a large bar, while the bright lighting and unscuffed cement flooring give it a clinical, school gymnasium-style feel.

We’re therefore surprised by the menu, which isn’t as typically French as you’d imagine. Of course there’s foie gras, snails with garlic butter and entrecôte, but there are plenty of more mainstream dishes if you’re more into pesto pasta than pâté.

We kick off with a goat’s cheese mille feuilles salad to share. Traditionally a custard slice made up of layers of puff pastry, this savoury take on the dish doesn’t really resemble the original, but it’s delicious nonetheless. The pastry is light and tasty and the rich cheese works well with the fresh leaves and tangy raspberry vinaigrette.

Main courses fare just as well, and the fillet steak is as good as many steakhouses serve up – tasty and perfectly tender, as well as a relative steal at Dhs159.

Our choice of grilled salmon is equally impressive, with a hefty slice of the meaty fish cooked expertly. It’s accompanied by grilled asparagus, breaded tomatoes and topped with a haystack of light and crispy shoestring fries and a swirl of citrusy pesto. The flavours work perfectly. It’s a surprise win.

Our advice? Dine on a Tuesday and you’ll get 50 percent off main courses – making it hugely affordable (as they mostly come in at under Dhs100 anyway). Plus, ladies get free drinks from 9pm until midnight, while gents receive a free bottle of hops.

As the night goes on the vibe gets more lively, the music ramps up and the harsh lighting dims, turning into a clubby vibe.

Le Frenchy might not be all hit, but it’s definitely not a miss.
