Life’n One

Healthy yoga studio café brings hippy chic to Jumeirah Beach Road

Time Out Says

Life’n One is an utterly new concept, brought to Dubai by a locally based Turkish entrepreneur. This villa-style venue at the tail end of Jumeirah houses what is essentially a wellness centre with a yoga studio. It hosts regular classes and workshops in activities including meditation, Pilates and capoeira. Alongside the yoga studio is a café, which serves a healthy, vegetarian menu of predominantly raw and gluten-free foods.

When you first walk into Life’n One, we defy you not to at least be intrigued by what you see. Anyone who has ever been to the hippyest, hippest holiday destinations in Asia will recognise the ambience and appearance of laid-back, cosy, organic chic. There is a lovely large garden that combines plenty of greenery and water features with furniture made of natural wood and swinging, hanging seats, perfect for lounging. The garden is a covered, AC-controlled tent, giving it a cool, summer-friendly temperature. Here, we could easily imagine we were in Bali, Nepal, Thailand or even grandma’s garden.

Service is friendly, helpful and reasonably efficient. However, with a specific menu like this, staff could do with being more comfortable and knowledgeable about what’s on it. For example, we were surprised to find that a question over whether the menu was vegan caused confusion. The list features breakfasts, many made with eggs (representing the majority of obviously non-vegan dishes on it), plus plenty of salads and recipes such as risottos, vegetable ramen (gluten-free) and raw zucchini lasagne. There are also a variety of smoothies, fresh juices and coffees.

One of the breakfast items we tried was the vegetable pancakes. This was a simple dish with home-made flavour and charm consisting of a generous portion of four decently sized eggy cakes, stuffed with shredded carrot and zucchini, which retained plenty of fresh vegetable sweetness. The mushroom risotto came as a fairly small portion, but with a rich flavour of saffron and a luscious texture to the rice. The little chunks of aubergine and mushroom also had a great soft and silky quality. In contrast, the zucchini pasta (made from spirals of raw zucchini) was a summery explosion of freshness, with crunch in every bite of the spaghetti, and a sassy, confident dressing of lemon, almond and coriander.

The raw chocolate brownies from the dessert selection were a deliciously gooey and chewy experience. They were full of the natural caramel quality of dates and interspersed with multiple mini-shards of nuts for an extra boost of flavour, texture and nutrients.

The concept behind Life’n One is an utterly market-cornering one. Dubai comes on leaps and bounds with every opening, but this is one style of café that feels wholly new to the city. Combined with its health-inspired menu, this is a place in which to recharge and re-fuel after yoga, or swing for hours in those amazing garden chairs with a cuppa. Highly recommended for backpacker chic and holistic living in Dubai.
