Little Manila

Authentic Filipino dishes that are a must-try for adventurous diners

Time Out Says

Do you know your Binalot from your Fiftea? If not, then you should head straight for Little Manila.

This cultural enclave in Deira warmly caters to Filipinos looking for a taste of home, but other nationalities looking to try something new are more than welcome, and really should go.

On the menu you’ll find everything from bistek (that’s onions and strips of beef steak slowly cooked in soy sauce) to papaitan for the braver diners – if you’re wondering what that is, it’s a soup dish composed of cow or goat innards.

Even better, the food here is an absolute bargain, with most main dishes costing just over Dhs20. Of course, if you’re not into innards, there are plenty of other options, too, including a vegetable menu and lots of noodles.

Hungrier visitors can opt for a huge Dhs377 grilled street food platter (which serves eight to ten people, so gather your mates, family and whoever else is around) featuring barbecued beef, chicken, chicken liver and wings among other dishes. It also comes with unlimited rice and ice tea.

And it just wouldn’t be like the Philippines without an enormous bread shop offering up delights ranging from double decker chocolate fudge cake to traditional pandesal rolls.

Masarap! (That means delicious.)
