Lock, Stock & Barrel JBR – The Walk

Haphazard service, but bar food that’s as good (and huge) as you’ll find anywhere in Dubai

Time Out Says

Food has been a while coming to the new Lock, Stock & Barrel at the Rixos Premium Dubai in JBR. And given the original outpost in Barsha Heights won the Best Bar Food gong at Time Out Dubai’s Restaurant Awards 2017, to say we’ve been curious about the new outlet’s culinary output would be a fairly enormous understatement.

Service is now in full swing, with each of the mega-bar’s food truck-style kitchens cooking up different dishes from around the world, taking in Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, American and British cuisine, all with a distinctly bar-friendly feel (hello, battered sausage).

We’re instantly impressed with the variety on the menu, if less so with the service, which gets increasingly hopeless as the evening wears on.

Thankfully, the food is nothing of the sort.

Keen for a fair comparison, we kick off with a Lock, Stock staple – nachos – which arrive as mountainous and liberally smothered in cheese, guac, sour cream, salsa and jalapeños as they ever were. Enormously messy, and absolutely marvellous.

A steaming dim sum basket reveals emerald-green daikon shrimp dumplings. Once our eyes (and appetites) have adjusted to their lurid hue, we dive in, and while we’d prefer less of the slightly baggy, floppy casing, the herby, minced crustacean within hits the spot. Also arriving to the table from the Far East are the duck spring rolls. Enormous, crisp, and crammed with juicy meat, they’re the richest dish of the night, but the date hoisin dunking sauce is a perfect foil.

We end our culinary tour back on home turf, with an order of hummus and shish taouk. The former is (and we’ll admit the prejudice that preceded our surprise) some of the tastiest we’ve tried in such a setting, thanks to a generous splash of lemon.

We’d love to tell you we enjoyed the shish taouk, too. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for it. Despite placing our whole food order twice.

Still, at least we’ve an excuse to go back (as if we ever really needed one).

The bill (for two)
1x nachos Dhs59
1x hummus Dhs29
1x daikon shrimp Dhs39
1x duck spring roll Dhs69
1x large water Dhs25
Total (excl service) Dhs221

The bottom line
Hungry? You’d better be.
