Time Out Says

If you can get past the overly snooty door staff, Mahiki actually isn’t the slice of Polynesian ponciness it first feels like outside. Instead, bar staff are friendly (take note, humourless bouncers), the drinks menu is varied and the vibe is bustly and hip. Foodwise it’s solid, not spectacular. Starters include a fun trio of burgers – wagyu beef with cornichon and a fried quail’s egg, rare roasted lamb rump with pea and mint purée, and salt and pepper chicken with a pineapple salsa – and mains take in everything from samosas (average) to crab cakes (decent but a bit dry) and scallops (seared to perfection). It’s better than it probably needs to be – this is a place to drink and be seen in more than anything else – but also none too friendly on the wallet. Dhs260 for a wagyu beef satay? Dhs175 for a tuna tartar? Your cash will go much further elsewhere.
