Maisan 15

Time Out Says

Innocuously located in Barsha South, Maisan 15 is one of those places that you’d only go to if you knew about it, but it should definitely be a place you visit soon.

A space that was formerly Cabin, set up by British artist Jonathan Gent – whose work adorned the walls and who had a working studio on site – the café still has arty charm.

The al fresco section is defined by a central collection of trees, which awn over the poky ground floor terrace, under which you’ll find local residents having a bite to eat or parents grabbing coffee having dropped their kids off at the nearby school.

The furniture is well-worn and looks homemade, while the flooring is made of plastic carpet, but that all adds to its appeal – you could be anywhere. There’s a community library inside, art from local artists lining the walls, an open kitchen with diner-style booths and old vinyl records playing.

And the food is equally worth a visit. A magnificent three-cheese sourdough toastie is far more appetising and sophisticated than it sounds, and stuffed with cheddar, edam and tellagio. It’s served with Dijon mustard alongside a small salad and a tomato jam that you’ll just keep dipping away at.

Alternatively, try the beetroot eggs Benedict, with charred beetroot, poached eggs, spinach, avocado purée – it’s a filling breakfast treat that’s not too guilt-laden.

This is a superb spot, worthy of venturing to.
