Time Out Says

With the winter weather has come a boom in business for restaurants at La Mer. Forgotten are the mostly empty spaces and sweaty faces of those brave enough to venture out in summer.

Now restaurants are pleasantly busy – if not heaving – and beachgoers have a heap of options to suit any mood.

Maison de Juliette is set back from the main beach area and prettily decked out with a quaint umbrella-ed terrace, pastel furnishings and a well-stocked counter of treats indoors.

However it’s not a strong start, and after being ignored at the entrance we throw caution to the sea breeze and seat ourselves. After a further wait we go and get our own menus. Service is haphazard from there on in.

The menu is Mediterranean-French and there’s a variety of salads, cakes and more hearty mains such as lamb chops or seafood gnocchi.

Breakfast is served all day, so we opt for the avocado salmon Benedict and Juliette’s Provençal omelette. The latter is packed with al dente Mediterranean veg and gooey melted emmental. It’s tasty without being mind blowing.

The Benedict has a clash of flavours though, with salmon, avocado and eggs smothered in sundried tomato hollandaise, which is more akin to Coronation chicken sauce. It’s not terrible, but it’s a bit odd.

And coming in at nearly Dhs200 for two breakfast dishes, a coffee and an orange juice it’s pricey.

There are better places to visit in La Mer.
