Time Out Says
Maison Mathis’ Arabian Ranches branch has all the makings of a fantastic café in terms of setting, so it’s a shame that the food just doesn’t live up. First, the good: it’s a bright and airy space that’s been tastefully designed like a very European café (minimal and white, black and white chequered flooring and plenty of tempting baked breads on display as you enter). One whole side of the café also opens up so that it’s open-plan with the lovely terrace area that overlooks the golf course. There’s space for kids to run about a bit, plus a playground with a climbing frame and slides. Unfortunately, the food is hit and miss. The menu covers heartier mains like burgers (quite a few different ones, in fact), pastas and fish, as well as breakfast dishes and light bites. Sandwiches and salads can be fresh and enjoyable on one occasion, and a bit limp or with dry bread on another. Mains such as pasta dishes and risotto tend to be far too buttery and extremely salty, while cakes and desserts are either tooth-achingly sweet or too dense (though the croissants tend to be pretty good). But while we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for a full meal, as a pleasant setting for a coffee and a light bite it can definitely do the trick.
