Time Out Says
Tucked away in the depths of the Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai Waterfront is Makar, a cosy, quaint Scottish bar.
The theme is apparent, thanks to the paintings on the wall and the cèilidh-worthy music, but it’s not overbearing. It’s also reflected in the menus. The drinks version has an impressive list of malts hailing from all areas of Scotland, while the food menu boasts staples that will have any Scotsman worth his tartan jumping in a cab.
Settle into one of the leather sofas, or in the petite dining area towards the far end of the cosy space, and order up some of the tasty bar snacks (if you can count haggis and tatties as a snack, that is). We’re not saying this is belt-friendly fare, but it’s top-notch.
Don’t miss the Scotch eggs, which are large, meaty and deliciously indulgent. They’re served with piccalili, which cuts through the rich yolk. The smoked cheese croquettes are also worth a mention. Equally sizeable, these spheres have a smooth, cheesy filling and are paired with a fragrant tomato jam.
Larger plates include beef rib and hops-batter fish and chips. There’s even a traditional cranachan for dessert (a raspberry, oaty, creamy dish of the Eton mess ilk).
We’ve said it before, but the main problem with the bar is the signage, or lack thereof, which means there’s little-to-no vibe.
Although this does mean there’s no one around to judge you when you wolf down that second platter of Scotch eggs.
