Mama’s Restaurant

Offers home cooking, but these family favourites are a mixed bag

Time Out Says

Ignore the cartoony logo and neon signage, and head straight inside, past the nondescript budget-hotel-style reception, up the stairs and into the equally ordinary dining space, with its kitsch water feature – welcome to Mama’s. Offering a selection of northern and southern Indian dishes, it’s difficult to discern what each dish is because most are described only by their Indian names. Don’t fret, however, as the friendly, smiley waiting staff will happily make recommendations. Don’t miss the fish molee, and do order the roti and excellent appam – hot, sweet and buttery little pancakes. The mixed platter of tandoori kebabs is also largely a success, but the truth is that the food at Mama’s is a little hit and miss. The bhindi masaledar (okra) is well prepared, as is the spinach kadai, but the meat in the nadan beef curry proves too tough and the ghee rice much too greasy. It’s still a nice place, though, serving food that measures up to the standards elsewhere in town. Worth a visit if you’re nearby.
