Time Out Says

When Mama zonia opened in Pier 7 late last year, it promised us a “tropical-chic” experience “inspired by an array of far-flung locations”. And on first impressions, that rings true.

As is the trend currently (we’re looking at you Hotel Cartagena, The London Project and Eve) the interiors are fully decked out with more foliage that you can shake a stick at (and there are plenty to be found, should you want to). It’s cool and classy, and has a fun, upbeat atmosphere.

It promises Amazonian vibes and though there’s plenty of greenery, happily we can’t spot any piranhas (want them? Head to The Green Planet – it now has 3,000 in residence).

Outside it’s typical Pier 7, with its stunning views across the Marina. Take a seat overlooking the glistening water and yachts and you’ll feel even further from the jungle. But the menu will whip you straight back into Latino vibes as soon as you look at it.

It’s one of the most interesting we’ve encountered in months – with fun twists and quirky dishes (we wonder how many people really brave the fried frogs legs with yellow curry sauce...). Other innovative items include yucca croquettes and hot ceviche of sea bass, prawns and octopus.

We kick off with a signature ceviche of yellow fin tuna, mango, yellow chilli and coriander. It’s delicate, expertly flavoured and totally delicious.

The scallop nigiri is one of the best dishes we’ve had this year, too. With tender shellfish pairing delightfully with yellow chilli, passion fruit and wasabi.

If you’re a carnivore don’t miss Mama’z prime beef short ribs, with chilli, confit ginger and garlic. A punchy, yet not overpowering, combination of flavours complement the super-tender meat. It’s a hit. Shellfish fans shouldn’t miss the giant tiger prawns, which are simply grilled with kaffir lime, chilli soy glaze and “jungle honey”, making for a gorgeously sweet, spicy and smoky combination.

It’s not overpriced for the area, either, with starters around the Dhs65 mark and mains from Dhs150 to Dhs300, and women get 50 percent off on Tuesdays.

Staff are well versed in the menu and make helpful recommendations throughout, and we’d also suggest getting a pre-dinner drink in the jungle-esque bar as the mixed drinks are fun and creative.

Mama Zonia is an excellent addition to the area. Go now.
